Turbulence Affector

Turbulence Affector

Updated: 1 Jul 2025

Applies Turbulence to physics objects.

Method #

This node applies turbulence to the motion of physics objects. This is typically used to apply local variations to physics objects motion, and simulate small gusts of wind. The motion is generated by using a smoothed noise field for both the direction and the magnitude of the applied velocity.

All nodes connected to this node are treated as if flowing to the parent node, and inherits any transformation changes along the chain.

Parameters

These properties control the 3D transforms of the node. Transforms will generally be inherited by child nodes, although they can be ignored through the Inherit Transform Channels attributes.

ParameterDetails
Position XThe objects position along the local x-axis.
Position YThe objects position along the local y-axis.
Position ZThe objects position along the local z-axis.
Rotation HeadingThe objects rotation around the local y-axis.
Rotation PitchThe objects rotation around the local x-axis.
Rotation BankThe objects rotation around the local z-axis.
Scale XThe objects scale along the local x-axis.
Scale YThe objects scale along the local y-axis.
Scale ZThe objects scale along the local z-axis.

Control the inheritance of the transforms from the parent.

ParameterDetails
PositionToggle inheritance of the Position from the parent.
RotationToggle inheritance of the Rotation from the parent.
ScaleToggle inheritance of the Scale from the parent.
World Position OnlyInherit the world position from the parent only, rotation and scale will be ignored. Overrides above properties.
Inherit TimeToggle inheritance of time from the parent.
ParameterDetails
AmountStrength the affector has on the affected physics objects.
Noise ScaleScale the size of the generated noise. Higher values will given denser and more erratic motion, while lower values will creater smoother and more stable motions.
Noise ThresholdSets a minimum amount the noise must be pushing beyond to have an effect on the affected physics objects.
Animation RateHow quickly the turbulence animated and changes over time.
Animation Time OffsetManually control how the turbulence animation is changing oer time by offsetting it in time directly.
Update Time ModeChange how the affector uses time.
  • Locked To Timecode : The effect is synchronised with the timecode, so changes in time will always yield the same results.
  • Running / Loopable : The effect is generated on a separate time to the timecode, ignoring composition loops. Useful for Real-Time exports, where content needs to play indefinitely. Not suitable for looping videos.
DampeningSoftens the motion applied to the objects to smooth out any erratic motion from the affected physics objects.

These properties control where an affector can affect the physics objects.

ParameterDetails
Use FalloffEnable falloff from the position of the affector.
Falloff ShapeSelect which shape to use to draw falloff from.
  • Sphere : Falloff is calculated radially outward from a point.
  • Cylinder : Falloff is drawn radially outward from a line.
  • Plane : Falloff is drawn outward from a plane.
Falloff Shape OrientationSelect which axis to draw the shape along. Only available for cylinder and plane.
  • X : Faces along the x axis.
  • Y : Faces along the y axis.
  • Z : Faces along the z axis.
Outer RangeThe maximum range outside of which the affector has no effect.
Inner RangeThe inner range within which the affector has full affect.
Falloff Curve PowerHow quickly the falloff decreases to the outer falloff.
Invert FalloffInverts the strength the affector will have on the objects, based on the falloff.
