Please read carefully!

The Notch 1.0 beta is a work in progress. We have been hard at work building this for the past three years, and while many major features are in place, several are missing or currently available in an incomplete state.

We know you most likely want to get creating as soon as possible, but it is important that you understand the current status and known limitations of the software you’re about to download and install. Please read the following carefully, thank you!

Performance and stability #

While performance and stability are improving with every new build, we have not yet hit our target goal for either. We expect performance to improve in many areas as we move from private to public beta, and the private beta phase we’re currently in is very important to help us gather bug reports and improve stability.

Supported GPUs #

  • NVIDIA: No known issues.
  • AMD: Notch 1.0 does not run on AMD (Polaris architecture) GPUs due to a driver bug, which AMD are aware of and have signalled their intent to fixing.
  • Intel: Notch 1.0 does not run on Intel GPUs due to driver bugs, which Intel are aware of and are fixing.

What’s available: #

  • An all-new user interface
  • Multiple new and completely rewritten renderers (NURA) with major improvements to rendering quality, ease of use and performance.
  • An all-new resource inspector which provides highly useful asset manipulation options for imported external assets directly within Notch
  • An all-new node embedding, instancing and sharing (Assets) mechanism
  • Asset and material libraries
  • Support for ray tracing of fields, procedurals, particles and transparencies is now available in the new path tracer
  • Completely rewritten 3D fields and simulations
  • Completely rewritten geometry and deformation processing
  • Rewritten importer and parsing of 3rd party assets
  • An all-new 2D root node for when you need to work in 2D pixel perfect space
  • An all-new spline tool
  • A set of all-new Shading Nodes which enable brand new ways to create shading graphs
  • Re-written caching mechanisms which speed up your workflow
  • New ways to use clones, including a Clone Painter tool and the ability to clone light nodes
  • A new launcher application with login features and automatic downloads of samples, assets, templates and guided tours for new users

What’s not or partially available: #

  • Block and Standalone exports are available. However, do not use them in real world productions or commercial projects without expressed, written permission from Notch.
  • Full Import/Export support for non-sRGB Colour Space images and videos.
  • The Render Queue is available, but has some limitations and is currently being updated

Known Issues #

  • UI: Network Editing, Connection Monitor, Artnet Monitor and some popup dialogs still use the old UI style
  • Rigid body physics is being updated and is still work in progress
  • Some problems exist with large canvas (> 6k) real-time and offline renders which may cause them to fail
  • Performance optimisation is on-going across the board

We are very appreciative of your time and effort to help us find issues and bugs you might encounter while running the beta. As we continue to release updated builds, we will keep you updated about the improvements and benefits of 1.0. Thank you for participating in our beta programme!

Application Privacy #

To improve the Notch Builder user experience and to help us diagnose errors and crashes, we collect anonymous diagnostic and usage data. Read more about what data we collect and why, as well as how to disable this data collection, on our application privacy page.
